As the colder months approach it is time to help our bees settle in for a safe and comfortable winter. This is one of the most important parts of the beekeeping year because a little preparation now makes a huge difference to the colony’s chances of coming through strong in spring.
One of the first tasks is checking that each hive has enough food to see the bees through the months when natural forage disappears. Even the best colonies sometimes need support, so we provide a reliable feed of syrup or fondant. This gives the bees the energy they need to maintain the cluster and keep the queen warm.
Alongside feeding we also focus on keeping the hive well insulated. We use insulated pillows which sit neatly inside the hive and help to regulate temperature. These prevent heat loss, reduce condensation and create a more stable environment for the bees. It is a simple addition that makes a big difference when the weather turns harsh.
With full stores and proper insulation the colonies are much better equipped to thrive over winter. It is always satisfying to close up the hives knowing the bees are as prepared as they can be. Now we simply let them rest until the first signs of spring bring them back to life.
